Yesterday, we went for a drive on the south side of Canyon Lake and found ourselves rolling into Startzville just in time for lunch.  I used to live in that area, but don’t make it back there much anymore.  I remembered Startz Café was always a wonderful place to eat and I encouraged my friends to stop there for old times’ sake.

This place is a gem!  Literally the same since the last time I visited more than 8 years ago, and probably exactly the same since it opened in 1963!  I even recognized a couple of the waitresses all these years later.

The atmosphere is that of an old country store with vinyl tablecloths, metal chairs, concrete floor and rock walls.  You’ll see all the old timers shooting the breeze in there, young families, and a sprinkling of tourists.  Remember, they don't take credit cards - cash or checks only.  How's that for "old school?"

But the real treat is the food.  They are only open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. most days, with dinner being offered on Thursdays and Fridays.  You can have breakfast all day and it’s delicious, but the lunch options also left me trying to decide which wonderful dish to try.  My friends had the ham and cheese omelette with all the fixings, the biscuits and gravy breakfast and I finally landed on the patty melt and fries.  We had to wait a little bit for the food to be served, but it was soooo worth the wait!  Down home cooking with attention paid to every detail.

When you come to stay with us in our vacation homes or the Tipis, be sure to put Startz Café on your list of restaurants to try…it’s located at 10350 Startz Road in Canyon Lake and this is very convenient to both Mezza Lago and the CCC!
